My name is Ginger. I founded
wing song aviary out of my love of parrots. Charlie
to the left here I have lived with for 22 years. Charlie
is a Female Yellow nape amazon. She is 23 years old
. She has been my life long friend through thick and
thin. My father had got her for me when I was a young
teen. So basically we were raised together. Owning parrots
as family members is a life long journey. Something
that should never be taken lightly. Because of there
longevity they can easily out live us. They also become
very bonded to their human families if we know it or
not. owning these majestic creatures is a privilege.
It takes more then just forking out the money . There
are many things to con cider. Such as space, care, time,
and lots of love. Parrots are not like puppies or house
cats, their behavior is very different. The amazon species
also well known for their talking ability are also the
terriers of the parrot world. They are feisty and fearless
in their ways. They are also very clownish and will
make a joke of you very quickly if you let them. In
training them you do not have the option of spanking
as you might a pup. For this would alienate them very
very quickly. They are a prey animals and we are known
pr editors so that action would put them in flight or
fight mode, and a parrot rarely forgets. in considering
a parrot for a companion, you have many options of size,
color and personality. You also have the option of baby
verses adult. There is myth out there that a parrot
will only bond to you if you get it as a unweaned baby.
This myth not only is completely wrong but very dangerous.
In the wild after a baby parrot becomes weaned and finally
leaves its parents. It wants nothing to do with them.
It needs to find a mate outside it's gene pool. so many
times a parrot will reject it's hand feeder when it
becomes mature. You also have to go through adolescence
with a baby and boy can these years be trying. Older
birds are not that hard to come by. There over hormonal
stages and what you see is what you get. and you may
not have to worry about out living them as much. So
take great care in finding that new friend
